Melbourne is a vibrant city with a thriving audience for its many arts festivals, galleries and film cultural events including the Melbourne International Film Festival (now in its 51st year) and the St. Kilda Film Festival. Animation has always been very popular with Melbourne audiences, and many prize-winning animators live and work here. There are two tertiary institutions (Victorian College of the Arts [VCA] and RMIT University) which have specific postgraduate animation courses and there are also many other media courses with animation components. However MIAF is Melbourne's first major animation-only festival. MIAF is an annual event which first took place in 2001. The Animation Posse who present MIAF also present MISAF (Melbourne International Student Animation Festival) and SISAF (Sydney International Student Animation Festival).
